What does propane smell like?
Propane has a very strong and unpleasant smell. It resembles rotten eggs, a skunk, or a dead animal. The smell is added to propane deliberately to help alert customers to a leak.
What to do if you smell gas
- Remove flame and sparks. Immediately put out all smoking materials and flammable items. Do not operate any electronics or lights.
- Leave immediately. Get everyone out of the building or area where a leak is suspected.
- Shut off the gas. Turn off the supply valve on the propane tank. Turn to the right (clockwise).
- Report the leak. From a neighbors or a nearby building, call your propane retailer, the local fire department, or 911 right away.
- Do not return to the building. Stay away from the area with the leak until your propane retailer determines it’s safe to return.
- Get your systems checked. Before using any of your propane services, contact your propane realtor or a qualified technician to check the system for leaks.
Preventing Gas Leaks
Establishing a regular schedule with your propane retailer can prevent leaks in the future. Leaving the valve open when your propane supply runs out can cause a serious safety hazard including fire or explosion. In addition, a leak when the system is recharged.
